Want to be a Collections Champion?

Original SGS Ballot Box, c.1724

We’re looking for 6-10 volunteer Collections Champions to join the Collections Team as we redesign our museum. This role is part of the Society’s ‘Reimagine’ grant from Art Fund. We are excited about the project and grateful for the support!

As a Collections Champion, you’ll help select the objects and tell their stories in the newly displayed museum, which reopens in spring 2027. You might have a specific area of interest (such as: jewellery, textiles, art, coins, local history, fenland drainage, African collections, etc.) or take a more general approach. You might be interested in designing cabinets, doing research on individual items, or working alongside the team on a particular gallery. You’ll have a chance to learn about and try your hand at a wide range of curatorial tasks, and to help us shape the SGS museum for the future.

What’s the commitment?

Project dates: March 2026 – April 2027
This role might suit: Collectors, local historians, students, aspiring curators, designers, artists, storytellers
Time commitment: About half a day each week, either on-site in the SGS Collections Space or remotely at home (or a combination of both)
Tasks: Participating in training and workshops; collaborating with other Collections Champions on object selection and research; working with SGS staff, officers and ‘Young Curators’; attending an optional ‘Away Day’ to visit Cambridge museums (planned for April/May 2026); helping with the installation of museum objects in 2027.

What you get from us

    • Training in collections handling, display, digitisation and research
    • Experience in designing displays and exhibits
    • A chance to spend time hands-on with collections with others
    • A free trip to Cambridge museums
    • Refreshments every day you volunteer
    • A chance to make your mark on the redisplayed SGS museum

For an informal chat, or to register your interest, contact Dustin (dustin.frazierwood@sgsoc.org) or Eleanor (Eleanor.chadd@sgsoc.org). We will hold a Collections Champions Info Session on Tuesday 17 February, 3pm at Broadgate House, with a chance to learn more, ask questions, and get a sneak peek of our plans.
