‘When Thistleton hosted a championship boxing match’. Presented by Susan Hughes.
On Sat 28th Sep 1811 upwards of 10,000 people descended on the tiny village of Thistleton in Rutland to watch a World Championship Boxing Match between the British champion Tom Cribb and the American champion Tom Molineaux. The characters and personalities involved in this incredible event appear to be drawn from the theatrical world of the 18th century playhouse – however, they all existed!
Come and here more about the two Toms, Gentleman Jackson, The Black Terror, Capt Barclay and the rest and discover just why Thistleton was the place to be in late September 1811.
