This illustrated lecture will celebrate some of the highlights from archaeology’s long engagement with music, supported by colour images and musical examples played on replicas and reconstructions. Explore the history of musical instruments and see examples from the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society collections.

Speaker: Dr Graeme Lawson, Cambridge archaeologist and member of Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, who has a lifelong interest in music’s ultimate origins and its place in our history and evolution. His recent book, Sound Tracks (Bodley Head/Vintage 2024), traces archaeology’s musical explorations, from the Fens to the Far East, and from the present day back to the first modern humans and beyond.
