Communications Officer – p/t (10 hrs/wk)
About the Role
Spalding Gentlemen’s Society (‘the Society’) has received funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (‘the Heritage Fund’) to develop plans for an expansion of its premises, operations and outreach activities. As part of this funding the Society seeks a Communications Assistant to support new and ongoing communications with its members and the public, as well as internal communications with staff, trustees and volunteers. The Communications Assistant will join a small team of current staff and liaise with a variety of volunteers who help to deliver the Society’s operations and activities.
The Communications Assistant will be a key member of the Communications & Marketing Working Group and will develop and disseminate information across a variety of media, including social media, websites, electronic newsletters, press releases, and print.
Creativity, clarity and timeliness are essential characteristics for the role.
For the right candidate, the Society is committed to extending the role beyond the project period. Subject to securing a Delivery Phase grant from the Heritage Fund, the role may be extended with increased FTE.
About the Society
Spalding Gentlemen’s Society is Britain’s oldest provincial learned society and second-oldest museum. Founded in 1710, our museum, library and archive holdings represent the activities of members over three centuries. The holdings reflect the global reach the Society has had since its foundation, with items from around the world as well as the local area.
The Society is currently in the midst of refurbishing its purpose-built 1911 museum, which is closed until spring 2027. During this period, the Society continues to display its collections and to provide access to its library and archive at Ayscoughfee Hall, a local museum and historic house with which we are co-locating. We also continue to operate our annual public lecture season, a monthly coffee-house evening for members and their guests, workshops for local schools, as well as a wide range of training and development for volunteers, young people and early career heritage professionals. The Society also leads the Fenland Heritage Network of approximately 40 heritage organisations across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and the surrounding Fenland and Fen-Edge areas. It is an active, vibrant organisation supported by its 340+ members. In addition to the 2 current staff, the Society’s operations are delivered by approximately 100 volunteers.
