Get hands-on with history through the Victoria County History project

Dr Gabby Storey

Residents in Spalding and its surrounding areas are being invited to participate in a free local history workshop this autumn. Taking place on Saturday 17th October, the workshop will look in more detail at Spalding’s modern history.

“This workshop is open to all – no matter your skills or experience – as a hands-on experience learning to read and transcribe a selection of modern documents from Spalding’s history,” says organiser Dr Gabby Storey. “It’s a fantastic chance to learn more about how Spalding became the town it is today.”

The event, which runs from 10am-4pm, will include sessions on ‘Researching social history and transcribing modern documents’ by Dr Gabby Storey, ‘The Postal Service in Spalding’ by Pat Wensor, and ‘Lincolnshire and the Poor Law’ by Dr Steve King.

The workshop has been organised as part of the Victoria County History (VCH) project, which was founded in 1899 as a national undertaking to record and write up the history of every county in England.

The VCH Lincolnshire – Spalding group, based at the Centre for Fenland Studies at Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and supported by Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, is currently researching the town to produce a publication for the area by 2028.

During the workshop, refreshments will be provided, but please bring your own lunch. Held at Spalding Baptist Church. Pre-booking is essential because numbers are limited. Please pre-book your space by emailing vchspalding@gmail.com.
