The bard of South Holland

May end up as a Sir or a Dame

To commemorate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, South Holland is searching for a Poet Laureate to write a composition that will capture the celebration from a local perspective.

Open to anyone in the South Holland area aged 16 and over, this is an open competition to find a voice for the area. Entrants are invited to submit a poem on the theme of the Platinum Jubilee and write in a poetic style of their choosing.

The entries will need to be submitted by 5pm on Friday 27th May. Entries will then be shortlisted with short videos made of readings of the poems to be put before the judges to select a final winner.

The project is being led by the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society in collaboration with Yaxley based Young Technicians Academy. The Society has a collection of works by some of the world’s greatest writers, including Shakespeare, Dickens, former national Poet Laureate Tennyson, and now is the chance for your writing to sit alongside these literary greats.

The winner of the competition will have their writing accepted into the museum’s collection for future generations to enjoy, a video will be produced of the winning composition to be shared across South Holland, and they will hold the title of South Holland’s Poet Laureate, presented at a reception at the Museum, for the following year.

When awards the position of the nation’s Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage said poetry should be used to, …celebrate and speak on behalf of the variety of voices who contribute to the rich chorus of British poetry from a wide range of personal, literary and cultural experiences, and to help poetry explore its potential in a multi-faceted, multi-vocal and multi-media age.’

Chair of the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, Petronella Keeling added this project has been funded by the National Lottery Awards for All Scheme and the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society wishes to thank the National Lottery and all National Lottery players for this opportunity.
